Galeri Manâ is pleased to announce Alexander Wagner’s first solo exhibition in Turkey between the dates 6 February – 16 March 2013. The exhibition will include the artist’s latest works on paper as well as a wall piece.

Drawing on music, architecture, and typography, in his works Alexander Wagner focuses on light, color, and geometry and explores the relationship between the perceptual and the cultural. In his recent works on display at Galeri Manâ, the artist plays with the tension between digital imagery and the imagery of traditional painting, creating multiple layers of material research and conceptual references. Neat geometric forms meet with dynamic gestures and coincidences in these works on paper.  The artist gathers a variety of materials with different speeds and languages on these surfaces and creates a unique balance between representation, abstraction and materiality.

Alexander Wagner has held solo exhibitions at institutions such as RaebervonStenglin, Zurich (2012&2010); JET, Berlin (2009); SOX, Berlin (2008) and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Belrin (2008). Recently, he has participated at group exhibitions at Galeri Manâ, Istanbul (2012); Laurel Gitlen, New York (2011); Ricou Gallery, Brussels (2011); LOG, Bergamo (2010); and Temporaere Kunsthalle, Berlin (2009). In 2010, Wagner won the Guido Carbone Award at Artissima. In 2009, Revolver Publishing (Berlin) brought out a monographic catalog of the artist. Born in 1978 in Germany, Alexander Wagner currently lives and works in Berlin. 

Alexander Wagner is the third exhibition in a series curated by Abaseh Mirvali, focusing on social, cultural and political experiences within a broad context of issues. Abaseh Mirvali is the Chief Executive Officer and President, Comisaria of Platform 5280, Biennial of the Americas, a biennial of contemporary art and critical thinking taking place in July 2013. Ms. Mirvali sits on the selection committee for several foundations, and in addition to advisory and directorial roles, is an internationally recognized contemporary art commentator and jurist.

Galeri Manâ, located in the Tophane district of Istanbul, is a converted wheat mill that dates to the 19th century. Founded by Mehves Arıburnu in 2011, the gallery seeks to establish an inclusive and interdisciplinary dialogue through its artistic program, special events and publications. Galeri Manâ works with artists who stand on the edges of contemporary artistic practice by investigating the boundaries of their mediums and expanding their conceptual reach.
