Irfan Önürmen
PENDULUM
March, 03 – April, 23 2016
C24 Gallery, NY
C24 Gallery is pleased to announce PENDULUM, a solo exhibition featuring all new work from C24 artist Irfan Önürmen.
In Irfan Önürmen’s exhibition titled ”Pendulum” we bear witness to manifestations of the artist’s spiritual states. In this exhibition, the artist oscillates like a pendulum between his inner experience and the traumatic nature of current reality. He sways between his inner self and ideological zones. It seems as if he is experiencing a constant dilemma. In order to cope with this condition, he has chosen to become both playmaker and killjoy in the garden of art. And he implements this choice. Thus, he has always enjoyed wandering the line between the serious production of artistic work, and an ironic view of such production. He appears as if he is attempting to create chaos in order to bring down the system, however he also displays an effort to form an order to escape chaos. The relationship between the geometrical forms he creates on the surface of the work and the emotionally expressive fields of colour constitute the other extremes of the oscillation he performs.
In his pursuit of harmony and dissonance, he has developed an aesthetic approach based on concepts such as vulnerability, transparency, fragmentation and depth. In the mysterious atmospheres he forms, the real appears to be covered, and hidden behind a veil. Dual meanings evoking anxiety always seem to follow us hard behind in his works. His topics are quite casual and mundane on the one hand, yet also monumental in a way that they symbolize the idea of a great humanity. The artist lives on a land where human tragedies are taking place, he is witness to exile and the destruction of human life, he senses the insidiousness and cruelty of war right by his side. Ultimately, his subject matter belongs to life, and is loaded with symbols and images that flow towards us from media.
The exhibition will be on view March 3, 2016 through April 23, 2016, with an opening reception on Thursday March 3rd from 6-8pm.
